Dolphin Discovery Day - A dolphin-watching field trip out in the Hauraki Gulf.
Your class will enjoy a day-long adventure, Dolphin Discovery Day
departing from the Pier Z Westahven Marina aboard the luxury vessel MV Dream Weaver. Join us as we cruise through this rich habitat in search of marine life including dolphins,
whales, and seabirds such as Terns, Shearwaters, and Gannets.
Our experienced crew will locate our target species, the common dolphin – a very colourful and curious dolphin found in these waters. These dolphins often approach the boat to bowride, and your class will be able to study these animals in detail.
If the dolphins are feeding, you will witness one of the most spectacular nature displays in the Gulf – hundreds of gannets plunge-diving into the sea while our dolphins herd their prey. Whales may also be spotted out in the Gulf, and can sometimes be seen feeding along with the common dolphins.
Our on-board Marine Educator will provide your class with current information on all the marine life we encounter. Your students will be led in on-board activities including worksheets, and will have the chance to collect scientific data on the species we encounter. They will also learn about the ongoing dolphin and whale research being conducted in the Gulf. Your students will be able to ask questions, and interact with our crew. This field trip will fit in well with your marine science curriculum units.
Dolphin Planet operates under strict guidelines set out by the Marine Mammal Protection Regulations of 1992 and holds a permit issued by the Department of Conservation to conduct these tours. We strive to protect our natural resources and minimise any risk to marine mammals.
